How to avoid a Christmas tree fire in your home

As the last of the turkey gets gobbled up, the Christmas decorations are being pulled out of storage and the trees are getting chopped down to be purchased by many families. Christmas is a time for beautiful lights, warm fires, and the aroma of baking cookies. Fire safety is a big topic among the holiday season. Continue on to read about some tips on how to pick out the perfect tree and how to keep your home safe!

How to pick out the perfect Christmas tree…

       First, you want to measure the area you want to place your tree so when you are looking at Christmas trees you can make sure it will safely fit. Second, with a live tree, you want to make sure the needles are flexible and smell    great. The smell allows you to know it is still fresh. If you shake your tree and a lot of the needles fall off, go to the next tree. Lastly, bring the tree home and enjoy! 

How to set your Christmas tree up…

       Place the tree stand a minimum of three feet away from fire, candles, and vents. If you did not cut the tree down yourself, you want to cut a couple of inches off the bottom so the tree is able to stay hydrated at the maximum level. Now, you are ready to place your tree in the tree stand! Fill the container full of water and check very often for the first day because the     tree will be thirsty. You may want to leave the tree in the stand for about 24 hours to let the limbs fully fall down before beginning to decorate.

How to keep the Christmas tree safe after being placed…

       Christmas tree lights need to be checked for any indicators of false wiring. Plug them in BEFORE placing on the tree to make sure each light is in perfect condition. When placing on the tree, avoid over using the same outlet. Keep a close eye on the lights throughout the holiday season! In addition to the lights, check the water level twice a day. Once in the morning and once in the afternoon/early evening.
