Don’t Get Twisted: Be Tornado-Ready| SERVPRO® of Bryan, Effingham, McIntosh & East Liberty Counties
Tornadoes—rotating air shafts in which warm, wet air mixes with cold, dry air in combination with a strong wind shear to generate an Updraft—can happen at any time.
Yes, even in late fall and early winter, when we’d rather be looking for a flake or two of snow to flutter past.
Planning
Know in advance what you’ll do and where you’ll go in case of a tornado or other severe storm. The best place to shelter from high winds is central, ground-level or basement location, away from windows.
Ensure disabled family members can access the shelter. Teach children to go to shelter, too, and remind them how to crouch and cover their heads in time of storm.
If you live in a mobile home, you’ll need to do a little more planning, because trailers/mobile houses are not tornado-safe. Can a next-door neighbor offer you shelter? Do you have a below-ground storage cellar or cement-block workshop available?
Preparation
In addition to planning what you’ll do when a tornado watch or warning occurs, prepare emergency supplies. Include:
- A source of weather information that will work if electricity and internet are down, such as a battery-powered radio
- Bottled water and nonperishable foods, in case roads are out for a while
- Everyone’s essential medications
- First-aid supplies
Weathering the Winds
When you hear a tornado warning for your location, get to shelter swiftly. Make sure to bring your pets to shelter, too. You can bolster your shelter with household items such as a heavy mattress or table to get under.
Stay safe as you emerge. Look for downed electrical lines and broken glass. As you begin to take stock of the damage and make a restoration plan, create careful records for your insurance. SERVPRO can help you with both post-storm restoration and the relevant insurance claims.
